BROMSGROVE SPORTING 1-0 COVENTRY COPSEWOOD- abandoned at 31 minutes... Report and images by THE MOWDOG...

Misfortune For Povey In Abandonment @ Bromsgrove…

Bromsgrove Sporting 1-0 Coventry Copsewood
(Abandoned just after the half-hour mark…)

Coventry’s Daniel Povey, stricken with a broken leg, lay for some time on the Bromsgrove pitch, being cared for by a small group of helpers, as an ambulance was awaited from er, Droitwich… It was clear that the game would not restart after such a long delay and so the abandonment was announced at around 4 15pm. Povey had suffered the injury following a sliding tackle by Sporting’s skipper and right-back Simon Fitter, who looked shocked and gutted by the situation, before he was summarily dismissed from the pitch.

The game had started brightly, with Copsewood’s Lawrence Rawlings, Martin Gormley and Connoll Farrell all looking lively on the break but Bromsgrove’s Aaron Daniels’ pace was scary, forcing Copsewood defender Andy Wilson-King into some desperate rearguard action. The use of quick forward releases by Sporting towards Daniels from deep midfield and defensive positions meant that home creative and instinctive duo Sam Wills and Reece Hewitt were often rendered redundant and forced to support forwards Chris Conway and right-winger Sean Brain for snippets. In the limited action of the 30 minutes or so, home ‘keeper Jake Bedford leapt spectacularly to clutch a right-wing centre, Fitter and then Scott Smith successively defended a deep left-sided free-kick for the hosts and Craig Jones defended real danger from the clever Farrell, all before Bromsgrove’s first real threat from a left-wing corner by Daniels. Copsewood’s Ross Wimbush sliced the near post delivery badly, the ball struck Michael Quirke and bounced down to Conway on the left byeline, 2 yards from the upright but visiting goalie Mitchell Campbell got down quickly to concede another corner.

Daniels soon fired in a fine left-wing centre, which was hurriedly batted down by Campbell but straight to Brain, who didn’t have to think, but fired an instant left-footer at goal from 8 yards, which the ‘keeper managed to turn aside well on his goal-line. The ensuing corner led to a break by Copsewood, which was covered by a fine Fitter tackle, before Bromsgrove attacked again on the left flank and scored a superb goal. Left-back Jack Wilson picked up possession, pushed a pass forward to Wills, who returned the ball deftly and Wilson ran onto it, smacking it first-time high into the roof of the net past a bemused Campbell from 21 yards. A really fine finish.

A defender managed to head a smart Wills free-kick down but after a bit of a melee, Wills’ shot was duly blocked, then positive attacking by Gormley won his team a left-wing corner, which Rawlings planted onto skipper Craig Civzelis’ head, soaring over Jones at the far stick, but the effort flew wide, with Bedford leaping left. Finally, Bromsgrove won a free-kick, left side of the penalty-box and Fitter’s well-struck delivery nudged the back of Wills’ head, as he challenged Quirke in the 6 yard box but the ball flew past the right angle of bar and post.

And then Fitter challenged Povey and the game was over. I wish him all the best and a quick recovery…
