'STAGE SET': A NEW POEM ABOUT AN OLD MOUSEHOLE IMAGE, CORNWALL...

Stage Set

He lurks to stage rear,
Tobacco pressed inside pipe;
Seafaring beard voluminous,
A character from a Newlyn School painting
Perhaps…

She sits towards stage rear,
Hair pinned ‘neath brimmed hat;
 Her Sunday best incongruous,
On a chair from the church fete,
Perchance…

But she surveys at stage right,
Tired and worn, her stance;
Apron hovers over garment dubious,
A harsh existence, daunting
Perhaps…

And stone clutters from stage right
To left, baulked in the lane;
Its claustrophobia nefarious,
A fearsome reminder of fate,
Perchance…
