THE MUSIC OF CARLY PEARCE: A NEW POEM...

Listening to ‘Every Little Thing’. ‘Color’, ‘If My Name Was Whiskey’ & ‘Dare Ya’ by Carly Pearce…

The persistent thud, like a death knell,
Slowly drums out the memories of every little thing;
The percussion echoes moodily all that there is to tell,
Whilst to her the man’s expression seems translucent,
Like a window…
Sung with plaintive force, the beat stops in a sudden pregnant pause,
Until a banjo strums life into sadness
And the warm voice laments her hell…

I have written these lines
But the song is the Color,
 Her tone lower than and somehow haunting
The backing vocalists’ confines;
Through the rush and the crazy,
The Color rises
And through a rousing chorus,
Her voice taunts and becomes daunting…

Words surfing a sweet guitar,
Wavering, hovering and harmonising,
The tone and range synthesising, merging
To surge, purge and urge
The inescapable truth, however risky,
That her man would miss her
And surely wouldn’t quit her
If her name was Whiskey…

Tempting, teasing and testing,
Yet wondering and daring…
Acoustic rhythms and a heavy swing beat
Preclude a dovetailing of voices,
Such rich harmony in a sharp refrain,
The words slotting and interlocking firmly
Within a tight chanting framework and she
Dares ya to listen and make the right choices…

Carly Pearce is an emerging singing talent and the four tracks referred to above have accompanied my recent trips to soccer games and I just felt it right to jot a few thoughts down…

It’s what I do…
